Job Summary
Performs custodial duties in an assigned area and provides guidance and support to, and occasionally works alongside, Night Custodians in their assigned area(s). Assists the Night Custodial Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor in ensuring that all custodial duties in assigned area(s) are done safely, completely, and in a timely fashion. Ensures that completed work is of a high quality to maintain a clean and healthy learning and working environment for all members of the campus community. In the Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor's absence, the Lead Custodian performs the Supervisor and Assistant's duties.

Essential Functions
  • Performs all custodial duties in assigned area, including:
    • Trash collection and removal;
    • Cleaning, sanitizing, and servicing restrooms; cleaning and sanitizing kitchenettes and drinking fountains;
    • Cleaning floors, which may involve vacuuming, shampooing carpet, sweeping, wet mopping, and/or scrubbing hard surface floors;
    • Washing and/or cleaning interior wall spaces;
    • Dusting furniture, window ledges and other flat surfaces;
    • Replacing light bulbs;
    • Shoveling snow and de-icing steps at building entrances and along walkways;
    • Cleaning windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces.
  • Maintains adequate stock of custodial supplies in assigned custodial closets.
  • Maintains custodial equipment in good condition and reports any needed repairs of equipment or building via written work order.
  • Follows department policies and procedures relating to assigned duties.
  • Organizes own work, sets priorities, and keeps to established schedules or deadlines.
  • Provides guidance and support to and occasionally works alongside Night Custodians completing the above-listed custodial duties in their assigned area(s).
  • Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ensures the safety of Night Custodial crew through regular safety inspections of equipment and review of procedures.
  • Inspects cleaned areas, providing guidance and training for areas in need of improvement.
  • Discusses concerns regarding any recurrent performance problems with the Night Custodial Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor as needed.
  • Follows additional guidance from the Night Custodial Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor regarding performance improvement measures and/or training to be provided in relation to performance improvement.
  • Assists the Night Custodial Supervisor and/or Assistant Supervisor with and the maintenance of equipment.
  • Participates in selected seminars and other training to improve and update methods, equipment, and supplies.

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of custodial equipment and supplies including their proper usage.
  • Experience with special project skills - floor stripping, carpet shampooing, etc.
  • Ability to make competent decisions concerning custodial duties and to provide constructive feedback where and when needed.
  • Ability to motivate and work well with fellow employees.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain a leadership role in guiding of Night Custodial crew.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations in a calm and professional manner.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed, including weekends.
  • Ability to work well with students, faculty, staff and the general public.
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
Employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions (temperatures varying from below 32 degrees to over 90 degrees) for periods of over one hour, subject to hazards such as proximity to moving parts, electrical current, etc., and involves heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders and lift 50 pounds. Must be able to be fitted with and wear a respirator. Must be willing to work overtime, including weekends, as required.

The hours for this position are 11:00 pm to 7:30 am.
