Overview
The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) is part of the Division of Student Affairs. We provide advocacy and assistance to the fraternity and sorority chapters and councils at NIU. Our goals are to introduce students to the fun and fulfillment of the Greek experience and to support them as they grow and succeed, on campus and after graduation. In all we do, we maintain a focus on our core values:

Position Summary
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life will provide the overall vision and oversight of Fraternity and Sorority Life, comprised of 4 governing councils and approximately 40 chapters, at Northern Illinois University. |
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Managing the Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life
- Provide leadership and vision to the department.
- Create and maintain yearly goals for the department.
- Create and monitor an annual budget.
- Supervision of (currently) one Associate Director and one to three graduate assistants to help carry out functions of the office.
- Conduct regular meetings with each supervisee, assess and monitor progress, and provide on-going feedback and annual evaluations of job performance.
- Create a cohesive team that effectively administers the office's operations and initiatives. Collaborate with campus partners to contribute to the student experience.
- Create working relationships within the division and across campus to further the success of the department and students.
- Compile data on programs and services.
- Conduct assessments as appropriate.
- Assist in establishing and/or updating relative policies, procedures, and processes.
Advising and Management of Community
- Advise, along with other FSL staff, fraternity and sorority governing boards including Interfraternity Council (IFC), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), and Panhellenic Council (PHC).
- Attending weekly council meetings and individual meetings, or coordinating with staff who may represent the department, with council leaders - providing supervision, support, and mentorship.
- Counsel, meet, and communicate regularly with Greek chapter presidents, chapter leaders, faculty and staff advisors, alumni advisors, and international and national headquarters staff and volunteers.
- Support chapter expansion processes and implementation.
- Support chapter and council recruitment efforts.
- Manage Greek grade and roster process including roster development, collaboration with Registration and Records to obtain academic information (GPA), preparation of reports for chapters, and individual meetings with chapter leaders based on report results to create academic improvement plan.
- Maintain retention records for fraternity and sorority life, create data charts for academic achievement; manage other assessments and data tracking as needed.
- Create and maintain a chapter assessment program/plan to encourage achievement of excellence within the Fraternity and Sorority community.
Training and Education
- Conduct regular and ongoing workshops, trainings, and/or retreats to serve various groups including staff, students and/or student organizations, faculty and/or staff advisors, alumni advisors and parents. Works with the Coordinator for Leadership Development for student leadership efforts as appropriate.
- Develop and oversee the strategic initiatives, services, and education for the Fraternity & Sorority student community as well as the governing councils for including collaborating with student leaders in establishing the overall vision for Fraternity and Sorority Life.
- Lead policy creation and interpretation related to Fraternity and Sorority Life. Includes working with chapters to stay in congruence with their national policies as dictated by national organizations and working with chapters to stay in congruence with SGA policies and local, state, and federal laws including but not limited to alcohol and drug possession and consumption as well as hazing and physical abuse.
- Communicate, interpret, and support university policies and expectations to students, advisors, and international and national office representatives.
- Provide chapter advisors with education, resources, and tools to support chapter growth and development.
Other Related Duties as Assigned
- Serve as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT).
- Support Divisional efforts as assigned.
- Serve on division and institutional committees as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)
- Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Education Administration or related field is required.
- Five (5) years of full-time experience (or equivalent) working in Student Affairs/Higher Education.
- Minimum of three (3) years of full-time experience directly working with fraternities and sororities.

- Previous direct involvement with fraternity and sorority life, including working with Greek governing councils, providing education, and implementing leadership training for students.
