  • Paraeducator Special Education Classroom

    Purpose Statement

    The job of Paraeducator Special Education Classroom is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of individual and/or small groups of special needs students in the classroom or community setting; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior; and providing clerical support to teachers and staff.

    This job reports to the Director of Special Education.

    Essential Functions

    • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives and meeting IEP Goals.

    • Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the classroom.

    • Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.

    • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, and a variety of health care professionals and professional support personnel for the purpose of communicating about progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

    • Escorts students for the purpose of ensuring efficient and safe travel.

    • Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, research based interventions and administers progress for students who need academic or enrichment remediation for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.

    • Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations, minimizing disruptions of campus activities and/or injury to involved parties.

    • Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; providing written reference; and/or meeting mandated requirements.

    • Monitors student's daily schedule and behavior plan for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment which may include assisting with students' personal care/hygiene needs.

    • Performs general clerical functions when time permits for the purpose of assisting teacher in the implementation of curriculum and teaching methodologies.

    • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit pertaining to District 219.

    • Provides time-limited class supervision for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment when the teacher must attend to an individual student's needs outside the classroom.

    • Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; and ensuring success in school.

    • Supervises individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

    Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

    KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: instructional procedures and practices; age appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/ behavior; social-emotional learning, knowledge of board policy, district, state and federal regulations/laws, and basic knowledge of computer skills and educational software programs.

    ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions; and ability to understand and interpret instruction and reteach using a variety of modalities.

    Responsibility

    Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.

    Working Environment

    The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.


    Experience

    Job related experience is required.

    Education

    Targeted, job related education with study in job-related area.

    Equivalency

    College degree, Teaching certificate preferred.
