OptumCare Cancer Care of Nevada is looking for a Medical Oncology Nurse Practitioner to provide psychosocial services to our patients. The position will be that of care provider and Psychosocial service department lead. The incumbent will work with physician leaders, interdisciplinary teams and operations to develop and implement the program as part of our commitment to providing full continuum of cancer care in our world class oncology center.

The Oncology Psychosocial Coordinator Nurse Practitioner will fulfill a number of duties, encompassed under the scope of psychological practice, to enhance the cancer patient's experience, and to strengthen the goals of the Cancer Patient Support Services program. They will work closely with the Supportive Care oncology team and oncologists to enhance the quality of life and health outcomes of cancer patients and their caregivers by addressing their emotional, psychological, cognitive and social needs. The Nurse Practitioner will conduct psychological assessments, provide individual and group counseling, and provide consultation and treatment of psychiatric disorders and emotional conditions in patients with cancer. They act as a patient/family advocate in navigating the healthcare system and facilitate team support of identified cancer patient and family needs through ongoing communication with multi-disciplinary OptumCare Cancer Care physicians and providers. Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific differences in the cancer patient population, including adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. This includes: psychological and developmental differences unique to each group.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identify psychological, social, financial and behavioral issues that may interfere with a patient's treatment plan and adversely affect treatment outcomes
  • Performs and documents a comprehensive psychosocial assessment sensitive to the cultural and age-appropriate needs of the patient and family
  • Provides recommendations for treatment and/or referral
  • Provides brief counseling and crisis intervention for patients, families and support systems
  • Provides and documents psychosocial and mental status assessments with recommendations for treatment and/or referral
  • Coordinates with physician offices and other referral resources as appropriate
  • Provides care appropriate to the patient population
  • Identify and ensure psychosocial distress screening process is evaluated, documented, and the findings are reported to the cancer committee
  • Adheres to compliance parameters of the program and that the cancer program fulfills all of the compliance criteria
  • Community involvement through leadership or organizing programs offered through ACS, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Cancer Support Community, etc.
  • Facilitation or co-facilitation of a support group for individuals impacted by cancer
  • Individual involvement in ongoing formal oncology-related educational presentations in the community and non-CEU oncology-related presentations
  • Create and make oncology-specific formal presentations to social work and/or interdisciplinary colleagues in your own settings (excluding care rounds and case conferences)
  • Participate in preceptorship of an MSW/DSW level social work student in an oncology setting as needed
  • Participate in research and clinical trials effort
  • Maintain an active leadership role in AOSW, APOS or APOSW through committees, SIG activities, Board membership, State Representative, etc.
  • Participate in Cancer Committee and Tumor Boards
  • Participation in oncology community prevention and screening programs
  • Purse and publish in oncology-related publications, in oncology-related newsletters, lay magazines or newspapers
  • Participate in new program development to meet a new need or enhance patient care by assisting with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for psychosocial distress screening for cancer patients.
  • Participate in grant writing.
  • Facilitate a Patient/Family Advisory Council.
  • Participate in service lines Accreditation and Recognition programs

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid/current State of Nevada Nurse Practitioner license or ability to obtain
  • Certification through ANCC, AANP, or ONCC
  • 3 years' experience working as a Psychosocial NP coordinator
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in individual and family counseling and crisis intervention
  • Excellent skills in individual and family counseling and crisis intervention
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness, effective written and oral communication, diplomacy and organizational skills
  • Self-directed, and creative in problem solving
  • Ability to work collaboratively, as well as independently
  • Prior experience working with Oncology patients, within an outpatient Oncology program
  • Employees are required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or a similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener prior to entering the work site each day, in order to keep our work sites safe. Employees must comply with any state and localmasking orders. In addition, when in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are expected to wear a mask in areas where physical distancing cannot be attained.
  • You will be provisioned with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and are required to perform this role with patients and members on site, as this is an essential function of this role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board of Oncology Social Work Certification preferred but not required
  • Active Nevada Social Work license if OSW Certified
  • Prior experience of meeting section 5.2 (psychosocial distress screening tool and program management) of the Commission of Cancer accreditation standard.
  • PMHNP certification
