ISWS is seeking to hire up to two environmental public health professionals. Official Title: Visiting Assistant Research Scientist, Environmental Public Health or Visiting Associate Research Scientist, Environmental Public Health. The initial focus for both positions is applied research related to groundwater, water quality, and private wells. Applicants will be considered for one of two open positions based on experience and education. The Visiting Associate Research Scientist, Environmental Public Health position requires a higher level of experience than the Visiting Assistant Research Scientist, Environmental Public Health position.

Required Qualifications for Assistant Research Scientist level:
Bachelors degree in a Physical Science related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience at it relates to this position. A minimum of five years (Bachelors) or 3 years (Masters) experience as an Environmental Health Professional. A minimum of 3 years of field experience inspecting, drilling, or sampling water wells or 3 years research experience with a water quality-related, public health focus. A current REHS or LEHP credential as an Environmental Health Professional, or the ability to get certified within 6 months of employment. Demonstrated knowledge of groundwater, wells, and water quality/water treatment related issues. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with other scientists, researchers, staff, and PRI clients. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly-employed software and databases. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with other scientists, researchers, staff, and PRI clients. Some of the work of this position takes place in an office setting. The work is sedentary and involves remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time working at a computer, using a keyboard and mouse, and using repetitive hand motions. Will require working in adverse field conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.), travel (including driving to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois working irregular hours and overnights; conference travel to industry events nationwide; lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be flexible in responding to variable and potentially harsh environmental conditions. Occasional overnight travel may occur.
Preferred Qualifications for Assistant Research Scientist level:
Masters of Science in Geology, Public Health or related field. Supervisory and training experience; GIS and statistics experience; Proposal writing and research project management experience. Any additional training or certifications as they relate to the position.

A minimum of ten years (Bachelors) or seven years (Masters) experience as an Environmental Health Professional. A minimum of five years of field experience inspecting, drilling, or sampling water wells or five years research experience with a water quality-related, public health focus. Past experience as a staff manager. A current REHS or LEHP credential as an Environmental Health Professional, or the ability to get certified within 6 months of employment. Demonstrated knowledge of groundwater, wells, and water quality/water treatment related issues. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with other scientists, researchers, staff, and PRI clients. Appointment: This is a visiting full-time academic professional appointment, renewable annually based upon satisfactory progress in the position and continued funding. Position may become a regular position at a later date depending on funding and a programmatic need. The starting date is negotiable and salary is commensurate with experience and skills.
