Van Matre HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital, a joint venture between Rockford Health System and HealthSouth, is a 61-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital that offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services designed to return patients to leading active and independent lives.

Van Matre welcomes anyone whose quality of life has been compromised by illness or injury. We provide the highest level of inpatient rehabilitative care available in our area. In addition to specialized programs to treat victims of stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputation we provide rehabilitation services that treat individuals with neurological disorders, orthopedic injuries  and major surgeries, severe arthritis, trauma, cardiac surgery, and pulmonary disease.

Our patients receive a minimum of three hours of therapy, five days per week guided by a care plan tailored for each patient and designed to reach their maximum functional potential. We embrace the multidisciplinary approach to the care provided by physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists, certified registered rehabilitation nurses, dieticians, case managers, pharmacists and psychologists.

Designed with our patients’ care in mind, Van Matre offers all private rooms with a private accessible bathroom, television, telephone and wireless internet capabilities.

The single story, 62,785 square-foot hospital is located on a 10-acre campus at 950 South Mulford Road in Rockford, Illinois. Van Matre is the only free-standing inpatient rehabilitation hospital serving patients in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. The hospital was first established in 1967 as an inpatient rehabilitation unit at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Rehabilitation is covered in full or part by most health insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. The hospital has contracts with most major insurance companies and is willing to negotiate with other companies as needed.

Prior to admission, patients are assessed and approved for admission by one of our attending physicians.
