Job Description
Summary of Position:
The DevOps Engineer is responsible for the health and stability of the development environments supporting smooth and highly efficient development operations. This role is also responsible for applying and introducing new technologies to satisfy new and emerging markets. The DevOps Engineer designs, documents, tests, and modifies current and new system components and sub-systems. Contributes to specific assignments and performs work which requires application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering activities.

Essential Functions:
  • Continually monitors and supports development environments and the product’s (system’s) health and security.
  • Analyzes production issues, defines and creates tools that help mitigate problems in the system design and integration.
  • Identifies changes that are necessary to maintain optimal system performance while liaising with management to successfully target and deploy solutions.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains tools that are used by internal engineering and customer service teams as they build, enhance, and support current and new products.
  • Develops solutions to monitor software health, performs log analysis, and automates system recovery.
  • Performs vulnerability and risk management for designated systems.
  • Evaluates and selects computers and computer peripherals, including off-the-shelf and custom components, printers, card readers, biometric devices and displays.
  • Provides technical leadership regarding state of the art computer technologies and trends.
  • Prepares system design concepts, creates detailed designs, performs analysis, tests prototypes, and documents completed designs.
  • Uses hands-on approach for building and evaluating prototypes.
  • Understands regulatory needs, including safety, radiated emissions, ESD; may guide development and certification appropriately.
  • Investigates and solves reported manufacturing and service issues; supports manufacturing and service needs.
  • Works with intra and inter-functional groups to optimize design and communication capabilities; works with external customers and suppliers, depending upon project and program activities.
  • Participates in reviewing functional specifications, cost targets, and computer and electrical design requirements.
  • May provide hardware project coordination, including requirements, schedule, and budget; provides project leader with status updates.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Competencies:
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools such as SVN
  • Knowledge of best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service
  • Basic understanding of server applications with database back end infrastructure
  • Working knowledge of Cloud technologies including Azure DevOps/TFS/VSTS
  • Basic understanding of client server environments, networking components, and client operating systems
  • Working knowledge of scripting such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, etc.
  • Solid working knowledge of configuring and supporting virtualization platforms, i.e., VMware
  • Solid working knowledge of enterprise deployment strategies, high-availability
  • Strong knowledge of Continuous Integration processes, solutions and tools such as Jenkins, Team City, Octopus Deploy, etc.
  • Ability to administer web sites, redirect HTTP traffic, interpret web logs, configure load balancers
  • Ability to generate and manage Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates
  • Ability to maintain new environment builds and complex troubleshooting
  • Understanding of computer components and peripherals, and computer trends
  • Knowledge of transmission line and wiring characteristics, and packaging and manufacturing principles
  • Knowledge of regulatory needs, including safety, radiated emissions and ESD; healthcare regulatory knowledge a bonus
  • Good analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills to evaluate business problems and apply knowledge to identify appropriate solutions
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; good group presentation skills
  • Good interpersonal skills; strong relationship building skills
  • Good leadership skills; good staff development skills
  • Good mathematical skills
  • Strong organizational skills; attention to detailKnowledge of computers to operative effectively with Microsoft Office Suite of applications; embedded system design tools and circuit logic/power simulators a bonus
Education and Experience:
  • A four year bachelor’s degree program or equivalent combination of experience and education in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering. Normally requires a minimum of four (4) to seven (7) years directly related and progressively responsible experience.
  • 3+ years in Cloud technical support, or Sys Admin/DevOps experience
  • 3+ years scripting experience (e.g. Perl, Shell, Python and/or Ruby)
  • 3+ years of DevOps Engineering experience including scripting, system deployment automation, and hardware and network infrastructure design
  • Solutions Expert or equivalent certification in a DevOps/Cloud/Automation area required
