Classroom training will include education and certifications such as the OSHA 10 for General Industry, HAZWOPER, CPR/First Aid, National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) content, and general career exploration and job training. Fieldwork will equip members with knowledge and skills for employment in various trades and jobs. Select applicants will be invited to attend an interview upon review of applications.
Must be 18 years or older. Must have a high school diploma or GED (or working toward a diploma or GED). Must commit to a 35-hour work schedule and be able to perform physical labor for extended periods. An ideal candidate will have interest in serving the community, learning about environmental issues related to landscape horticulture and other forms of green infrastructure, and participating in career exploration activities to support acquiring and maintaining full time permanent work. Members must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Candidate should have knowledge of and demonstrate appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
IMPORTANT ATTRIBUTES: Desire to volunteer. Interest in working with plant material and learning about conservation programs and policies. Interest in knowledge of the basic components of green infrastructure like tree maintenance, water retention, and environmentally friendly practices. Ability and willingness to be trained in equipment related to the practice. Ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Ability to apply an equity lens in decision making; read, analyze, and interpret professional periodicals and journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Interest in exploring full time permanent career/job options, learning soft job skills, and commitment to acquiring a full-time permanent position immediately after the 6-month program is completed.
MENTAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the mental and physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes, or airborne particles. Will work outdoors and conditions are typically loud. When in classroom training, work is performed in a normal office environment with little exposure to outdoor temperatures or dirt and dust and conditions are typically moderately quiet. *Please notify the Human Resources Department if accommodations are required to participate in the selection process.
