Description

Employees in this title typically perform a variety of clinical and clerical support tasks in an outpatient clinic, under the direction of medical staff. Under the direction of licensed healthcare professionals, enters orders into the health record systems for purposes of creating records for meeting the standards and objectives for Electronic Health Records (EHR) as consistent with Meaningful Use core guidelines &/or similar regulations.

Examples of Duties

Direct Patient Care - 80%
1. Prepares patient for exam by obtaining vital signs, reason for visit, medication list, and allergies.
2. Performs patient testing, such as EKG, pulse oximetry, accucheck, and urinalysis.
3. Assists nurse or physician with patient procedures as directed.
4. Perform dressing changes and staple/suture removal as directed.
5. Refills medications per Department and SIU Medicine protocols.
6. Under the supervision of a nurse, answers patient telephone calls and directs calls to appropriate person.
7. Notify patient of test results, as directed by the provider.
8. Willingness to float between areas if need arises.
9. Perform injections as directed by the SIU Healthcare and Department of Internal Medicine guidelines.
10. Maintain quality control, maintenance, and calibration records of clinic equipment (including accucheck controls, fridge temps, urinalysis controls).
11. Collect and bag soiled linen from clinic exam rooms.
12. Clean and sterilize all instruments used in clinic for patient care by following established guidelines.
13. Download and print CPAP reports.
14. Perform portable Spirometry testing.
15. Perform resting and exertional oximetry tests.
16. Travels to satellite locations, as assigned.
17. Other duties as assigned by the RN or Charge Nurse.

Indirect Patient Care 20%

1. Stock exam rooms on a daily basis to ensure adequate availability of supplies needed for daily clinics.
2. Prepare charts for clinics by ensuring that any test results/office notes are available for physician prior to patient arrival.
3. Complete necessary paperwork for insurance pre-certifications/referrals, prepare and send noshow letters, sort faxes and/or mail, scan documents to the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
4. Following a medical provider's orders, enters into the EHR requisitions for medications, laboratory, radiology and other diagnostic tests.
5. Schedule patient appointments.
6. Provides back-up for reception as needed.

Qualifications

1) High School graduate or equivalent; AND

2) Possession of a current/valid medical assistant certification (CMA, American Association of Medical Assistants; NCMA, National Center for Competency Testing; CCMA, National Healthcareer Associate; or RMA, American Medical Technologists)

Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.

This position requires knowledge of the Medicine Clinic operation policies and procedures on a daily basis. The individual in this position must be able to deal effectively with different personality types under periods of mild and high stress, resulting from clinic schedule variances. Excellent communication skills and proper use of the telephone is also necessary. The individual must maintain a professional and courteous manner when dealing with public. The person must maintain strict confidentiality in regard to any patient-related information and office concerns. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
