Job Summary:

The advisor will be responsible for providing professional advising and holistic mentoring to incoming and continuing students majoring in a STEM discipline. The advisor will work with the Student Center for Science Engagement staff to identify and provide STEM students with research and training opportunities. The advisor will also assist with developing and implementing programs related to student professional development and success in STEM. The advisor will assist with social events organized by the Center.

Job Description:

  • Provides direct and daily individualized holistic advising that includes personal and career advising, professional mentoring and consultation for STEM majors related to a broad spectrum of matters related to student success, including but not limited to assistance with finding professional internships, graduate school and job applications, resume and personal statement writing.

  • Develops and provides comprehensive, holistic coaching in STEM, focusing on student success and discipline-specific navigation of their educational, professional, and personal commitments.

  • Assists students with creating a professional development plan and building solid professional, networking and transferable skills related to a career and/or graduate school.

  • Assists students with the transition to graduate school, professional schools, and careers.

  • Coordinates and assists with student participation at local, regional, and national conferences, including guiding students in drafting abstracts, application materials, proper conference etiquette, developing networking skills, goal setting, and chaperoning/attendance at multiple conferences with students.

  • Works with the SCSE Director and staff in the planning, development, and coordination of the Summer Research and Professional Training program and the appropriate placement of students to ensure student success; assists with evaluating the program elements and incorporating feedback to continually improve the program.

  • Assists in the development of Center policies, procedures, and objectives.

  • Supports the Center in developing and maintaining strong outreach initiatives that will provide a broad range of opportunities to current NEIU students, including summer research opportunities.

  • Assists in selecting and implementing assessments related to research, internships, conference attendance, and student presentations.

  • Monitors student progress and maintains student records for the purposes of internal and external reporting.

  • Maintains and develops professional skills, for example, in teaching, research, or mentoring.

  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to further the mission of the SCSE.

Minimal Qualifications:

  • M.S. in LifeSciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related field(s).

  • Knowledge of innovative and effective strategies for mentoring students, focusing on research, graduate school and career opportunities in STEM.

  • Evidence of strong organizational and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Departmental Preferences:
  • PhD inLifeSciences, PhysicalSciences, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a closely related field(s).

  • Experience working with underrepresented groups in STEM, low-income and first generation students.

  • Mentoring experience is a plus.

  • Social Media in a professional setting.

  • Fluent in Spanish is desirable.

Salary: $45,000 - $50,000
