Job Summary

The Sr. Design Engineer will be a member of the product development team as a mechanical design and development engineer for the rotary screw compressor portfolio. Responsibilities include all facets of the development process for a given compressor. This engineer must have the ability to multi-task but be detailed oriented, communicate effectively and work in a fast paced and dynamic environment. The engineering team is a diverse international group thus the position demands continuous interaction across multiple cultural and time zones.

Responsibilities

  • Key responsibilities will be for new product development projects, but as necessary will also include new technology introduction and life cycle engineering activities.
  • Develop detailed specifications and lead product and technical design reviews.
  • Execute to project plans, meeting schedule and cost commitments as well as customer requirements.
  • Identify areas requiring analysis. Perform design analysis and calculations with accuracy. Follow good engineering practices and develop practical solutions.
  • Identify multiple candidate solutions, perform trade off studies and select optimum solution based on customer requirements as defined by the product design guide.
  • Assist designers with calculations and design. Develop test plans, work with laboratory on assembly, installation, and testing. Perform data reductions, performance calculations and create logical presentations of information in report format.
  • Coordinate and provide technical support and assistance to other departments such as Assembly, Machining Operations, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Marketing, Quality Assurance, etc.
  • Assist in resolving all warranty and field problems.
  • Incorporate lessons learned from field issues into new product designs through FMEA process.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • At least 5 years of work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated understanding of practical "real world" applications. Compressor or rotating machinery experience preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated project leadership skills.
  • Must be team player capable of working with multiple engineering teams located in USA and India.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in generating project plans to deliver on-time, on-cost, and on-specification.
  • Able to work in a matrix team environment and interact with other teams
  • Ability to create test plans and analyze test data results
  • Experience analyzing test data and deciphering cause & effect relationships
  • Capable of generating creative and innovative solutions to complex problems

Travel & Work Arrangements/Requirements

Ability and willingness to travel 10-15% (primarily domestic to Ingersoll Rand testing and manufacturing facilities). This role will be based at our facility in Quincy, IL (relocation within the continental US is available).

Key Competencies

  • Experience in industrial machine design
  • Experience with CREO or other 3D solid modelling software
  • Must have good presentation skills
  • Familiar with ANSI Y14.5 drafting standards, GD&T standards, etc.
  • Versed in various design tools related to DFSS: DFMEA, DOE, DFM&A, etc.
  • Competent knowledge of machining and machine shop practices
  • FEA and CFD analysis experience is a plus, but not necessary
