DEPARTMENT MISSION

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center of Chicago exists to express the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army through a safe, enriching and sacred environment where all individuals have access to opportunities to reach their physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential. OUTCOMES

This position will support the full mission of The Salvation Army through providing educational and artistic opportunities for Kroc Center members which enable participants to grow to their fullest potential physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. The Arts and Education Director provides direction to the oversight, development, and day-to-day operations in the programming of the Family Life and Education Center as well as the Academy of the Arts. The Director is responsible to provide leadership to the education and fine arts programs including but not limited to after-school programs, day camps, tutoring, Kid Zone, Teen Zone, computer lab, adult education, senior citizen activity, family education, adult programming, dramatic arts, music, dance, and visual arts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As part of the RJKCCC Managerial Team, provides leadership in administration, planning, implementation and evaluation in order to provide quality programming through arts and education programming.

  1. Responsible to develop and effectively implement class schedules, curriculum, and fee schedules for the Education and Arts programs.
  2. Ensure compliance with procedure and policy in all areas of responsibility.
  3. Provide leadership in setting standards for programming and in evaluation of outcomes.
  4. Ensure safe from harm standards are maintained.
  5. Work in collaboration with other departments and program managers to plan after-school programs and day camps.
  6. Provide appropriate program guide material to marketing department and welcome desk.
  7. Work with marketing staff to promote program materials that attract new members and revenue.
  8. Work with Officer Staff to ensure that The Salvation Army's mission is accomplished through Christian education and worship programming in the education and arts department.
    1. Maintain good public relations for the Education and Academy for the Arts Center and its programs.
    2. Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participates through staff/department meetings, memos, schedules, flyers, newsletters and one-on-one discussion.
  1. Serve as a community liaison to schools.
    1. Work with local schools to develop collaborative activities that involve students in Kroc programming.
  2. Develop cooperative ventures that engage other community groups in the development of education and arts programs.
    1. Investigate collaborations that will help enhance education and arts in the Kroc Center.
  3. Develop and effectively manage the annual budget for the Education and Arts programs of the RJKCCC.
    1. Create and maintain an administrative support system for timely and accurate record keeping, including the areas of statistical reports related to all education and performing arts programs, accounting of expenditures and other reporting as required.
    2. Serve on Advisory Council and Program Committee.

Leadership to Staff

  1. Mange the recruitment, selection and training of staff in the education and arts department in order to ensure all areas have competent and trained employees who are committed to the mission of RJKCCC and The Salvation Army.
    1. Ensure job descriptions are current for the education and arts staff.
    2. Ensure that all staff is trained in Safe From Harm and proper guidelines are followed.
  2. Oversee staff scheduling in assigned departments to ensure appropriate levels of coverage.
    1. Review performance of staff and conduct appropriate evaluations.
  3. Work in cooperation with Ministry Staff to provide support for music for Sunday or other special events needed by The Salvation Army.
  4. Ability to supervise program areas during evenings and weekend hours as needed or dictated by activity schedules in need of direction.
  5. Serve as a Manager on Duty (MOD) as assigned.

RJKCCC Departments

  1. Promote and execute facility rentals when the Kroc Center programs are not taking place.
    1. Give direction to event coordination with users of the Academy for the Arts facilities, ensuring setup of all sound systems, stage lighting, and theatrical equipment to meet specified event requirements.
    2. Coordinate advance preparation needed with production personnel regarding technical rider, insurance certificates, and other contract requirements. Be responsible to correctly interpret and expedite event contract rider information.
  2. Work with the RJKCCC Officer for Congregational Life in the coordination of building usage and schedule of Church related activities.
  3. Work with marketing staff to promote program materials that attract new members and revenue. This includes opportunities for fund raisers or sponsorships so that each program can be self-sufficient within the Kroc formula of financing.

Facilities/Safe Working Environment

  1. Develop systems that safe guard the facilities, supplies and equipment related the Arts and Education Program in order to maintain a safe working environment.
    1. Maintain safety standard procedures and develop ongoing safety training for all Arts and Education related equipment (i.e. lights, audio, rigging, hydro lactic lifts, computer, industrial arts, recording studio etc.)
    2. Report all problems with facilities to Archibus.
  2. With the Facilities Director, establish an on-going preventative maintenance program for the Family Life and Academy for the Arts center.
    1. Ensure the repair and maintenance of equipment systems and components.
  3. Ensure the attractive appearance and cleanliness of the Education and Performing Arts facilities.

Meetings and Communication

  1. Work in a cooperative manner with the other on-site directors of the RJKCCC program through weekly leadership team meetings addressing issues that may interfere with the effective and efficient operations of the RJKCCC.
  2. Attends all scheduled staff meetings and management team meetings.

Payroll

  1. Set up the schedule for your department based on the needs of your program and the approved hours and status of employment.
  2. Manage payroll by supervising, entering hours via the Kronos system and evaluating/ controlling your budgeted payroll.
  3. Ensure that scheduled hours via the schedule and actual hours worked do not consistently exceed the maximum hours approved for an employee status.

Other Duties

  1. Leadership is provided for other Kroc Center projects as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelors in Education, or in a related field, with a Master's degree preferred.

3 to 5 years of experience in the areas of Recreation Administration, Education and/or Fine Art, which includes a wide-variety of programming including but not limited to the planning, organizing and facilitation of after school, day camps and instructional classes for various age groups.

A minimum of 2 years of experience in a senior level management position in Recreation/Educational administration or a related field with responsibility for a minimum annual budget of $200,000.

Must have, or obtain within three months, a valid Illinois Drivers' License and insured transportation and be able to meet The Salvation Army's approved driving requirements.

Must be Safe From Harm certified within 30 days of employment.

Must be AED/CPR/first aid certified within 60 days of employment.

JOB LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is required to do moderate physical work.
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC.
  • Will be expected to participate in community center activities as needed.
  • The work environment for this position includes a community center environment with a medium to high noise level.
  • Other Kroc Center projects as assigned.
