Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) is a high-functioning specialized surgical department for patients requiring various surgical repairs or corrections pertaining to any element of the heart and all associated structures functioning with the heart, including internal chambers of the heart, the lungs, and the aorta. This unit services all ages from young adult to geriatric populations, and procedures will carry all anesthesia classifications, ranging from routine-elective to hyperacute emergent salvage patients. Various procedures incurred in CVOR include, but are not limited to, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)(60%), aortic valve replacement (AVR)(18%), mitral valve replacement and complex repair (10%), Maze and/or atrial fibrillation procedures (5%), complex ascending and aortic arch dissection and aneurysm repairs including Bentall (5%), and any other procedures including combined complex intra-cardiac procedures (2%). CVOR nurses will provide standby for hybrid OR procedures including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and intra-cardiac pacemaker lead extractions.
CVOR nurses are involved in preoperative patient preparation performing critical patient assessments. Nurse's primary roles are exemplified in the actual operating room suites assisting the surgeon, anesthesiologist, perfusionist, and other nursing roles. CVOR nurses will engage in interdepartmental communication with various other departments including but not limited to laboratory, blood bank and pathology, radiology, same-day surgery, PACU and CVICU, cath lab, and nursing administration.
